Walter W. Smith, age 85, life resident of Pulaski, passed away Sunday at his home. Walter was born July 22, 1932 in Watertown, the son of Lynn and Margaret Daniels Smith. He graduated from Pulaski Academy in 1950 and from Hamilton College in 1954. He served in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956. Walter graduated from Albany Law School in 1959 and was admitted to the Bar in 1960. Walter was married to Sarah (Sally) Holyoke on June 27, 1964.
Walter was a lawyer with a general practice in Pulaski for 56 years, retiring in 2016. During that time he held various other legal positions and participated in a number of civic projects. Walter was an Acting Justice for Pulaski in 1965. He was the Pulaski Village Attorney from 1965 until 1987 where he was involved with the building of the Haldane Center, Springbrook Apartments, the Village sewer system, and in 1976, the construction of the John Ben Snow Municipal Office Building. He served as the Altmar Village Attorney from 1961 until 1991, and he was Counsel for the Committee on the Judiciary, New York State Assembly from 1971 until 1974. Walter was an incorporator of and 25-year member of the Board of Directors for the Pulaski Medical Center. He was an incorporator and 25-year member of the Board of Trustees of the Pulaski Public Library.
Surviving are two children, son, Lynn B. (Jenny) Smith of Rochester and a daughter, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Smith Shipton of Mountain Top, PA, four grandchildren, Simon Smith, and Andrea, Matthew and Sarah Shipton, and one brother, William Smith of Rochester.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, January 14th, at the Foster- Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski, NY with a spring burial Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
