Obituary of Barbara Sherman

Barbara A. Sherman, 90, of Lorton Lake passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018, at Morningstar Residential Center, Oswego. She was born in Geneva, NY on July 6, 1927, to the late Elmer and Ruby (Cook) Dewey. She graduated from Geneva High School and Cornell University. On February 5, 1949, she married Charles Robert (Bob) Sherman who preceded her in death in January, 1985. Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her oldest son, Cmdr. Brett T. Sherman USN, and her brothers Jim and Donald Dewey.

 

Bob and Barb moved to Baldwinsville in 1956 and after their youngest child started school she worked for the Onondaga ARC as an assistant director for the Adult Workshop program. In 1964 she became a special education teacher for the Baldwinsville school district until her retirement in 1982 after which she and Bob moved to their retirement home on Lorton Lake. Barbara was active in the Ricard Grange, the Lorton Lake Association and was a past member of the Town of Orwell Planning Board.

 

Barbara is survived by her children; daughter Donna (John) Wagner, sons Jon and CW4 Robert (Deborah) Sherman USA (retired), daughter-in-law Beverly Sherman, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 13th, at St. James Episcopal Church, 24 Lake St., Pulaski. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski, prior to the service.

 

Donations in Barbara’s name may be made to St. James Episcopal Church and/or any of the veterans’ support organizations.
